Chips, cracks and decayed cavities in teeth can be repaired with the use of fillings. Direct fillings replace lost tooth material and strengthen the structure of the tooth. While amalgam (metal or silver) fillings are effective for repairing teeth, they do change the color. Composite fillings can be color-matched to the teeth, while still repairing tooth damage. As part of our family dentistry options at Scott A. Babin, DDS and Associates, we are happy to offer patients composite or white fillings at our dental office in Edmonds and Renton, WA.

What is a Composite Resin?

While amalgam fillings use metal to bond cracked teeth or fill in lost tooth material, composite fillings are made from ceramics, glass or plastics. Composite resin is a specialized formula designed for repairing teeth without the use of metal. Composite resin has the consistency of putty. It is soft, pliable and easy to use and form to the tooth. Once it is put into a cavity or crack, it is cured using a special light instrument, becoming hard and durable. The best part is that composite resin comes in a variety of tooth colors, allowing it to blend in with the surface of your teeth.

Composite fillings are slightly less durable than amalgam or metal fillings, but they can still last for 10 years or more. They are best used on front teeth that need repair. The color is more aesthetically-pleasing, and there is not as much pressure put on the front teeth. Composite fillings can also be used on back teeth or molars, but how long it will last will depend on the size of the filling or position on the molar. Amalgam may be recommended for some larger fillings on back teeth, you can discuss the options with your dentist.

If you need a tooth repair, composite fillings can protect your teeth while maintaining your white, beautiful smile. To learn more about composite fillings and other dental treatments we offer, contact us at Scott A. Babin, DDS and Associates in Edmonds and  Renton, WA.
